ISO 45001:2018

Health and safety above all - Value to Man

The definition of health was formulated in 1946 in the Statute of the World Health Organization and defined it as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity".

Health is directly linked to prevention, i.e., taking timely measures to protect ourselves and others from possible risks.

Prevention is the attempt to deal with the causes that generate and reproduce a problem so as to reduce the probability of its occurrence.

The workplace is an important chapter for all working members of every society. The time spent in the work environment is oftentimes longer than the time spent at home. It is therefore deemed necessary to ensure health and safety at work for every employee.

A hazard-free work environment should be the primary goal of any modern business or organization.

What is ISO 45001:2018?

According to the International Labor Organization, more than 7,600 people die every day from occupational accidents or diseases. That is why an ISO committee of Occupational Health and Safety experts developed an International Standard with the potential to save almost three million lives every year.

ISO 45001: 2018 sets out the requirements for an Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) management system, and provides guidance concerning its use so that businesses and organizations create safe and healthy workplaces, in order to prevent injuries and work-related diseases, but also to proactively improve its OH&S performance.

Obtaining an ISO 45001: 2018 certification will demonstrate to your employees and customers that your business values, and cares, for its human resources, by investing in the improvement of their safety and the reduction of workplace risks, and by creating better and safer conditions.

The structure of ISO 45001:2018 is similar to other ISO management systems, so the approach will be familiar if you are a user of standards, such as ISO 14001 or ISO 9001. ISO 45001 builds on the success of earlier international standards in this area, such as OHSAS 18001, the International Labor Organization ILO-OSH, various national standards, and the International Labor Standards and Conventions of the ILO.

ISO 45001: 2018 is designed to be implemented by any high or low risk enterprise or organization, public or private sector, regardless of its size, activity or geographical location, and wishes to establish, implement and maintain an occupational health and safety management system.

As long as there are people who work in a business or an organization and their health can be affected by the work environment, a management system can have a positive impact.
